Date: 21-25 August 2023

Venue: Vienna, Austria

Invitations:  On behalf of the International Association for Hydro-environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) I am delighted to invite you to participate in the 40th IAHR World Congress to be held in Vienna, Austria, from August 21st to 25th, 2023. For more than seventy-five years, the biennial IAHR World Congresses have brought together leading experts to help address the world’s pressing water environment engineering challenges. The event has traditionally provided researchers and decision makers the opportunity to share recent advances and experiences, identify emerging technology trends, and engage in lively debates that have positively impacted our world.

Following the last IAHR Congress held in 2021 in Granada, Spain under the theme “From Snow to Sea”, the main theme of the 40th IAHR World Congress will be “Rivers – Connecting Mountains and Coasts” focusing attention on the importance of considering the integral water cycle to address present and future challenges.

Since its creation in 1935, IAHR is known as a leading international organization of engineers and professionals in fields related to the water environment. IAHR stimulates and promotes research and its application – by sharing new research paradigms and networks, setting industry standards, informing best water management practices, and nurturing young professionals.  Through its powerful knowledge products and networks, IAHR makes important contributions to sustainable development in many ways.

At the upcoming Congress, IAHR will unleash its new Strategic Plan and present exciting knowledge platforms and prominent speakers on global water environment issues including climate-induced changes to water resources, adaptive management, artificial intelligence (AI) and smart water management, Eco hydraulics, and policy forums. I, therefore, welcome you to join us and share with us your work. I look forward to welcoming you to Vienna in August 2023! (Prof. Joseph Hun-wei Lee, IAHR President)

On behalf of the Congress Organising Group (COG) of the 40th IAHR World Congress and the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR), we are delighted to invite you to join the 40th IAHR World Congress in 2023 in Vienna, Austria.

Austria has always been a country rich in water and history. Many worldwide renowned scientists working in the field of water lived and worked in this country and contributed significantly to the strong position of water-related engineering studies at Austrian universities.

Being situated at the Danube River, Vienna is one of the major connecting points in Europe bringing together East and West, South and North. From a worldwide perspective, Vienna always demonstrated to be an excellent meeting place which is not only proven by the large number of international organisations based in Vienna but also by numerous international conferences with thousands of participants. The basis for this international success story is the perfect reachability via plane, train or car, the safety and hospitality of the city as well as the rich cultural heritage which comes alive at every corner of the town.

With the Danube River as the second largest river in Europe, we will have a fascinating water body of international relevance in direct proximity to the congress venue which offers the possibility of great scientific and practical presentations connected to large rivers as well as technical tours demonstrating integrated management of such a big stream in a metropolitan region.

BOKU – University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, is one of the leading life science universities in Europe with a strong focus on environmental engineering and water management. The IAHR 2023 World Congress will be held in the Austria Center, a world-renowned conference and event center which hosts numerous international events every year.

The IAHR 2023 World Congress in Vienna will bring together not only the Danubian riparian basin countries from the Black Forest to the Black Sea but also the European and international countries. (Prof. Helmut Habersack, Head of Congress Organising Group)
