INTRODUCTION:
The integrated river basin management aims at coordinating various sectors in the river basin, to protect the safety of the people dwelling by the river and to promote sustainable use of the land and water resources, arriving at economically productive, socially equitable, and environmentally sustainable. These goals can be achieved in principle in many ways. The scientists and engineers involved in river basin management have accumulated rich experiences and taken effective methods in the integrated river basin management for a long time. IRTCES wishes to share their findings and knowledge with the persons engaging in integrated river basin management in the world.

The International Advanced Training Workshop on Integrated River Basin Management has been designed in fulfilling the demands of hydraulic engineers, managers, stakeholders and decision-makers in various countries. Through lectures, discussions, exchanges and one-day field study, the participants will improve their professional river basin management theory and knowledge, get much latest concepts, techniques and information, and establish linkage among participants.

The general objectives of the training course will focus on the following points:

 Theory of integrated river basin management;
 Principles of water resources management;
 Measures of water and soil conservation;
 Basic knowledge of river ecology and methods restoration;
 Experiences on developing and applying technologies for integrated river basin management; and
 Information exchanging in the related fields

The International Advanced Training Workshop on Integrated River Basin Management, as one of major activities of the International Sediment Initiative (ISI) of UNESCO for 2008-2009, will meet the objectives of ISI “Education and capacity building for sustainable sediment management”. The workshop will also be one of the activities for the Silver Jubilee of IRTCES.

UNESCO Office Beijing is extending financial contribution for organizing this training course under ISI of IHP-UNESCO.
