Session on ‘The influence of dams on sediment regimes and implications for management’ HS11.4, European Geosciences Union General Assembly EGU, 19th – 24th April 2009, Viena, Austria. Summary: The aim of the session is to explore the relation amongst dams and sediment transport, and the effects of impoundment on sediment budgets and channel morphology and sedimentology. These are central issues for management and restoration actions in regulated rivers worldwide, and especially in Europe in view of the imminent implementation of the Water Framework Directive. It is anticipated that papers will address issues relating to reservoir siltation, alteration of sediment transfer and consequences on the downstream fluvial processes. In addition, modelling of sediment transport in regulated rivers, and water and sediment management experiences such as flushing flows and gravel augmentation in a variety of hydrological environments, catchment scales and impoundment degrees and configurations are expected. Socioeconomic issues related to sediment disequilibrium and cost benefit analysis of management practices are also very appropriate in the scope of the session. Abstracts submission closes Tuesday 13 January 2009. For more information please click on: Ramon J. Batalla (on behalf of co-conveners Michael Singer, University of Saint Andrews and Damia Vericat Aberystwyth University) IMPORTANT DATES: Deadline for Support Applications: December 7, 2008
