The 2nd World Irrigation Forum was held in Thailand

The 2nd World Irrigation Forum (WIF2) was hosted in Chiang MaiThailand, from 6-8 November, 2016. Mr. Chatchai Sarikulya, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperaatives of Thailand (MOAC), and Dr. Saeed Nairizi, Prisdient of International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) gave welcome speeches at the opening ceremony of WIF2. Vice Minister Tian Xuebin, Ministry of Water Resources of the People’s Republic of China, attened the Forum, awarded the World Irrigation and Drainage Prize, as well as gave a key speech on the plenary session of Round Table for Ministerial Meeting on Policy Issues.

Vice Minister Tian introduced China’s achievements on irrigation and drainage during the Round Table for Ministerial Meeting, especially on water-saving irrigation in agriculture field to ensure food safety and food supply, and the next five year plans. Vice Minister Tian also pointed out, China’s government has continuously strengthening policy support, enhanced more governmental investment to develop water-saving irrigation, guaranteed twelve consecutive years of agricultural production to feed over 1.3 billion people with self-sufficiency, to promote sustainable use of water resources. Tian also expressed that to ensure food security, promote rural transformation and development of agricultural modernization and ensure the sustainable utilization of water resources must strengthen farmland irrigation and drainage facilities, as well as the agricultural water management. In the next five years, the Chinese government will put forward five new strategic development concepts based on innovation, coordination, green, opening-up and sharing, to promote the large-scale water conservancy construction with a focus to accelerate the improvement of irrigation and drainage system, as well as the development of efficient water-saving irrigation system.  The Chinese government will continue to establish effective cooperation mechanism with all governments and international organizations, including strengthening technology exchanges, enhancing exchanges and cooperation in the field of irrigation and drainage worldwide, and jointly together to promote world food security and sustainable development. 

During the forum, Vice Minister Tian held separate meetings with Mr. Chatchai Sarikulya, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives of Thailand (MOAC), and Dr. Saeed Nairizi, President of International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID), to exchange views on future opportunities for further deepen bilateral cooperation. Both Minister Chatchai Sarikulya and Dr.Saeed Nairizi gave high evaluation to all of the achievements of successful practices and experiences over agricultural water-saving irrigation, and food security in China.

The 2nd World Irrigation Forum was held by both International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage and Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives of Thailand, with theme “Water Management in A Changing World: Role of Irrigation for Sustainable Food Production”.Ministers of Agriculture or Water Resources from eight countries, including Bhutan, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Nepal, Laos & Sudan,  and government officials, international organizations, research institutions and business organizations representatives from over 20 countries in total of 1200 people attended this forum, conduced in-depth exchanges and discussions on agricultural water management, our role in meeting the sustainable development goals, improve efficiency on agricultural irrigation and other related issues.
